Kalarville: Become a teacher in his 50s and become a teacher in his 20s, which is very different, especially when you have a successful career in other fields.

When I resigned from the work of the British Financial Times in 2017 and received related training for a teacher, I knew that my future life will face two losses. The first is MDASH; mdash; this is a bit terrible, although I have weakened this aspect through as much as possible.

The second loss is more difficult to prevent. The social status of my last job was a bit unreasonable. For more than 30 years, when I attended the dinner, once people knew that I was a columnist in the Financial Times, I would stare at me and increase my interest in me. I have been accustomed to this.In contrast, the status of teachers is outrageous. In most places around the world, the status of teachers is slightly higher than the police, far less than doctors and engineers.Only in a few countries (including China and Indonesia), the status of teachers in society is as high as doctors. In any other places, people will often say an old saying with ridicule: have the ability, career; no ability to teach.

In 2016, I co -created the charitable NOW Teach with people. Its purpose was to convince older professionals to receive re -training and become a teacher. At a night event held for recruitment in the early stage, a 40 -year -old banker stood up and said that what hindered him to become a teacher was his status in the eyes of his colleagues. At that time, I shrugged and told him not to care.I have also experienced losing position, and I suggest that he do this too.

However, on the week when I started teaching, a strange thing happened. At that time, I was riding a car on a street in London and felt that I was neither capable and out of control in a new post. At this time, a stranger stopped me.He said what you do now is very important.congratulations.

I told him that it was too early now.Only when I learn how to be a good teacher and persist for five years can I be eligible to accept congratulations.

From the beginning, the congratulations on my ashamed of me followed, and people seemed to be curious and admired what I wanted to do.If the status is as explained in the Cambridge Dictionary MDASH; mdash; a person's degree of respect, admiration, or values mdash; then, as a newcomer of a teacher who has not yet established a foothold, it seems thatIt seems to be higher than the status of a columnist with an experienced and experienced column.

A colleague who received training one by one also said similar situations.Annie Bull, who has served as a senior civil servant and now becoming a language teacher; Mary Bull; Anne Marie Lawlor has noticed it early that the interest in her new job she met in social occasions seems to be much higher than thatWhen she used to be a civil servant.

In view of the low status of teachers, it is one of the reasons for the serious shortage of teachers. I think this situation with a high status at first glance is worth investigating.I started investigating all students participating in NOW Teach training to see if they have experienced similar situations.45 of these students received training with me in 2017, and 75 people began to receive training in September last year.

First of all, I asked them if people met in social occasions if they felt more interesting. Some people replied that as an internship teacher, I was too tired to participate in any social activities. But nearly two -thirds of people said that people are more willing to talk to them than before. This may not be surprising, because almost everyone is interested in education, and everyone likes to hear the first -hand story. It is much more interesting to have fun about children's mischievous news than the board of directors.

Only one student (she used to be a political journalist) said that her social value has declined because her former friends and colleagues were only interested in Westminster's latest gossip, and she no longer provided this typeThe news is.

Then I asked this group of people, what impact did a teacher affect their status in the eyes of others? Most people are engaged in the work that is more valued (and high salary) in the past mdash; mdash; they used to be investment bankers, corporate lawyers, consultants, civil servants, filmmakers and doctors mdash; mdash; And most people are moving towards the pinnacle of their respective fields. Now they are at the bottom of the less prestigious occupation.

Nevertheless, only 6%of people said that their status has declined, and about 65%believe that since becoming a teacher, the status has risen. If you can draw such a conclusion mdash; mdash; that is, the status of the teacher is not so low that it is sad mdash; then, that's fine, but I suspect that the real explanation is not the case.

You become a teacher MDASH; mdash; especially when you have achieved certain achievements in other fields, mdash; mdash; it is very different from you to become a teacher in his 20s.Former marketing executives Jonathan Shaw said that the reason for the reason why Maslow's demand level theory is fully in line with MDASH; mdash; the highest level of demand is the needs of self -realization.

I think that as we grow older, many of us will start to question whether we have spent our lives well. He said that teaching has brought a different position. Compared to the age of 25, this statusI am more important for me 50 years old.

Laura Bull; Lara Agnew was a documentary producer and now teaches English. She believes that her age has changed her understanding of her status. When we were young, we thought its status came from the outside.Recognition, promotion, and competition MDASH; mdash; all these are considered to be improved from the outside.

Now I am old, and I realize my views on my status more from my heart. My view of my contribution and personal value is my status.

If the significance of the status is that it is created by us with age, how do the students of Now Teach feel themselves? After switching to a teacher, did their self -worth increased? In my survey, 62%of people claimed that self -value increased.

Considering the difficulty and hard work of teaching, especially in the first year of teaching, this is unusual.13%of the students said that self -value decreased, and one of them explained: When you feel at a loss and do not know what you are doing, it is difficult for you to feel good at yourself.

But others think that because they feel useful, they feel better. One of the students described his inner joy when he was better than the former teacher. He said: The titles or promotion I have obtained in my previous work never made me feel useful and achieved.

For me, teaching is conducive to achieving self -worth, but the reason is different. In my career, this is the first time I don't think about myself.Part of the news work is for myself, and teaching is only related to children.Even in the days when I had a mess in class and did not obviously change the life of any child, my mood when I came home was not as low as a day after the bad day in the office.

It is a bit ironic that this unexpected status has risen.I suspect that most of us have long no longer worried about their career status. At that time, I should ask everyone a question: How important is the status for you now?I guess most people will answer: not very important.
