Singapore and China established diplomatic relations in 1990, Jiang Zemin, who served as General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in 1989, and became the President of China in 1993.The following year, he was invited to formally visit our country as a Chinese leader for the first time. The invitation to him was the then president of my country Wang Dingchang and Prime Minister Wu Zuodong.
The friendship between Jiang Zemin and Singapore has been associated before he has served as the Chinese President of China, and even before the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. This origin has continued to deepen during his 10 years when he has served as the chairman of China. He actively promoted bilateral cooperation, including the new China Suzhou Industrial Park project described as "the top priority", and has a very close friendship with the founding of the founding Prime Minister of my country.

In November 1994, Jiang Zemin came to visit for three days. One of his journey was to discuss economic cooperation projects with our leaders, especially the progress of China -Singapore Suzhou Industrial Park.
Suzhou Industrial Park was the largest cooperation project of the two governments at that time. China regarded it as a model for national foreign economic cooperation.Jiang Zemin once described that Suzhou Industrial Park is the "top priority" of China -Singapore economic cooperation, and it is also a key project of China's foreign cooperation.
Although the early development of this highly valued project is not very smooth, it still lays a solid foundation for the cooperation projects of the two governments, including Tianjin Ecological City and China -Singapore (Chongqing) strategic interconnection demonstration projects.
In fact, before that official visit, Jiang Zemin had left footprints in Singapore in 1980.At that time, Jiang Zemin was the deputy director of the National Import and Export Management Committee of China. He led a group for two weeks to investigate how my country ’s industrial development and understanding how the Economic Development Bureau attracted investment for Singapore. He mentioned in an interview with the Hong Kong Bauhinia magazine 10 years later that the Yulong Industrial Zone in Singapore made him deeply impressed.
In October 1990, Jiang Zemin met with Li Guangyao, then the then Prime Minister of my country. The two met with each other and established a deep friendship for many years.
Li Guangyao described Jiang Zemin in the book 1965 · 2000 in Li Guangyao's memoir 1965 · 2000 as a "chairman with a smile" and "lively and outgoing CCP leader".Li Guangyao said: "The two of us are very close. Jiang Zemin loves to make friends, but I will be frank."
Although Li Guangyao paid for Wu Zuodong shortly after the two people first meetings, and renamed the cabinet's capital, he still kept in touch with Jiang Zemin.
Li Guangyao's daughter, Dr. Li Weiling, wrote in the 2010 Strait Times that his father and Jiang Zemin were "gathering between two good friends".
In May of that year, Lee Kuan Yew's original plan and his daughter flew directly to Shanghai to visit the World Expo.My hometown gathered with him.Jiang Zemin hosted Lee Kuan Yew for the rich Yangzhou characteristic food, and went to the thin West Lake cruise river after meals.
In October of the same year, Mrs. Li Guangyao's death died, and Jiang Zemin sent a letter from Beijing to Li Guangyao, expressing his sincere condolences to Mrs. Li's death.
Jiang Zemin also attaches great importance to the relationship with my country's second -generation leader. In 2000, the 10th anniversary of the New China Construction diplomatic relations visited China in April, and Jiang Zemin met with Wu Zuodong in Zhongnanhai. He said that the relationship between China and Singapore's relations is very good, and the mutually beneficial cooperation between the two sides in various fields has achieved fruitful results. He said that China attaches great importance to the development of Sino -new relations and believes that this is an important part of China's friendly cooperation with Southeast Asia."We hope to work together with the new side to promote mutual benefit and cooperation between the two countries to continue to update greater development in the new century."
