A person familiar with the matter revealed that Italian officials hinted in a private talks with Taiwan's official private talks that they may be willing to withdraw from their cooperation plans with mainland China to seek to strengthen cooperation with Taiwan.

Bloomberg News on Thursday (April 20) quoted insiders who were unwilling to disclose their identities. Officials from the Ministry of Industry of Italy recently discussed with Taiwan officials in Taipei to strengthen the semiconductor production and export cooperation plan.They told Taiwanese officials that Italy may give up the "Belt and Road" initiative to participate in mainland China.

People familiar with the matter said that the relevant decision will be filmed by Prime Minister Melonyne, but she has not disclosed her final position.

Italy is the only member of the Seventh -way Group (G7) of the "Belt and Road" initiative.Although the memorandum of self -understanding was signed by then Prime Minister Josepe Conte that it had rarely had the actual impact since the signing of in early 2019, it was of high symbolic significance for Beijing in the context of the tension between China and the United States and its Western allies.Unless Italy chooses to give up, the agreement will be automatically renewed in 2024.
