This is also the first time that dinosaur fossils have been discovered in Hong Kong.
The founding location of the fossil is located in Chizhou, which is located in the UNESCO World Geopark in the Northeast of Hong Kong.Ning Hanhao, Director of the Development Bureau of the SAR Government, said that it is of great significance to provide new evidence for the research of ancient ecological research in Hong Kong.
It is understood that the SAR government received a notice in March this year, saying that the sedimentary rocks of Chizhou may contain suspected vertebrate fossils. The Development Bureau immediately invited experts from the Institute of Ancient Spine to come to Hong Kong for field inspection, fossil sample research, and suggested management plans and discussing follow -up work. After the field inspection, experts collected samples containing suspected vertebrate fossils. After a preliminary identification of slices of bone tissue, the experts determined that the sample was a large -scale old -fashioned dinosaur skeletal fossil, which was about 145 million years ago to 66 million years ago.Experts will further study to confirm the type of dinosaurs.
The dinosaur fossil will be exhibited to the public from the Hong Kong Cultural Relics Exploration Pavilion from October 25.The SAR Government is currently building a temporary studio and display space in the courtyard of the Tanzhi Museum. It is expected to be open to the citizens by the end of this year. At that time, citizens can watch expert Qing Xiu fossil and watch the fossils that have been cleared at close range. In addition, in order to facilitate subsequent inspections, excavations and research in Chizhou, Chizhou Island will be closed from now on.
