(Morning News) The South Korean Ministry of Industry and Commercial Resources issued news on Wednesday (February 9). The Expert Group of the World Trade Organization (WTO) determined that the United States' implementation of guarantee measures for South Korea's production of washing machines violated the WTO rules and sentenced South Korea to win the lawsuit.
Yonhap News Agency reported that the United States has implemented guarantee measures for large -scale domestic washing machines from Korean production since February 2018.This is actually a measure for Samsung Electronics and LG electrons. The South Korean government immediately protested and resorted to the WTO in May of the same year, stating that the United States restricted imports in violation of WTO rules.
It is reported that the US trade protection measures include the import quota restrictions on imported large household washing machines, imposed 20%of tariffs on imported washing machines within 1.2 million units, and exceeded 50%of import tariffs. In the second and third year, the tariff rates collected by imported washing machines within 1.2 million units were reduced to 18%and 16%, respectively.Over 1.2 million units, the corresponding tariff rates were reduced to 45%and 40%, respectively.
Due to the extension of this measure, it has been extended once three years, and it has entered the fifth year in February this year. Therefore, imported washing machines within 1.2 million units will levy 14-30%of tariffs and impose 0-30%tariffs on 130,000 components.
According to the regulations, the World Trade Expert Group filed a report on February 8, local time, for 20 days to 60 days after the membership of each member was passed. The report is deemed to pass.
Analysis believes that the results of this case are of great significance to correct the practice of US abuse of security measures. However, from the perspective of local companies, the positive impact of the judgment results has limited impacts from the perspective of local companies. In addition, the dispute resolution procedure will take about one year, so this guarantee measure will be applied as usual in February next year.
Experts believe that appeal in the United States is more likely. In this way, trade disputes between the two countries will continue.
