Liang Yuansheng, a professor of research professor of the Department of History of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, pointed out that the island is restricted by transportation, natural environment and political conditions, and will be controlled once it is linked to politics. However, if it is in terms of language, culture, psychology, and race, it doesn't matter, and these world mainland will become inspiration for island intellectual reform.

The Chinese society in Singapore and Hong Kong, the two island cities, has been tangled between political orientation and cultural identity for many years.Today's island cities and their residents have two worlds: small islands and mainland world. The two are closely connected, and there is no certain separation between the two.

Liang Yuansheng, a professor of history at the Department of History of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, expressed the above views at the 2019 International Academic Symposium on the China Cultural Center yesterday. This is an academic seminar organized by the Nanyang Society to celebrate the 80th anniversary and cooperate with the 200th anniversary of the opening of Singapore. The theme is Southeast Asia Chinese and Asia -Pacific New Century.

The seminar was divided into four links. The first part of the session was lectured by Professor Liang Yuansheng, entitled island and the mainland: Analyzing the political orientation and cultural identity of Chinese people in modern Singapore and Hong Kong.

Liang Yuansheng first quoted Li Guangyao, the founding Prime Minister, said that Hong Kong and Singapore are the island colonies. Most of the population comes from the Guangdong -Fujian region of southern China, and both have been ruled by British colonists and are deeply influenced by British culture.

Some people in the two places agree with the United Kingdom, Xiang Mu Western culture, as well as a group of people who love their homeland and travel between China and the West, and have more complicated attitudes between China and the West.

In his speech, Professor Liang focused on several social leaders, such as the local Lin Wenqing, Lai Jixi and Chen Botao of Hong Kong.

He pointed out that when Lin Wenqing was awarded an honorary doctorate degree in the University of Hong Kong in 1919, in addition to praising traditional Chinese culture and Confucian culture in the gratitude, the University of Hong Kong was also compared to the best gift from the United Kingdom to China to show China to ChinaBeautiful side.In addition, on the one hand, he supports the colonial government established by the United Kingdom in Singapore and becomes a member of the Legislative Council, and on the other hand, Qiu Yiyuan, known as the Poetry of the South China, promotes the Revival Movement of Confucianism in Southeast Asia.

Liang Yuansheng believes that for Lin Wenqing, cultural identity and political orientation do not constitute contradictions.

In the early 20th century, Hong Kong also raised a wave of national studies. After the death of the Manchu, Hong Kong influxed a group of former Qing relics. Most of these groups of people who read the scriptures are Han people. They set up private groups to promote the traditional Confucian culture. However, at the same time, the Manchu government, which is loyal to the forgotten, does not support the Republic of China.

Liang Yuansheng said: How do they view the tangled between culture and politics?Lin Wenqing said clearly in his speech. What he is unwilling to leave is language, psychological, and race connection. There is no obstacle for political loyalty. He can be the people of Britain at the same time. This gives many overseas Chinese around the world a revelation.

Liang Yuansheng also believes that they are all people who want to break through island restrictions. The island is restricted by transportation, natural environment and political conditions, and will be regulated once it is linked to politics. However, if it is in terms of language, culture, psychology, and race, it doesn't matter, and these world mainland will become inspiration for island intellectual reform.

When they imagine how to welcome the new generation, they will extract cultural resources from the mainland. It is a Confucian culture in China, and it is likely to be the idea of science and technology in Europe. There are many people wandering between the islands and the mainland, especially those who have received higher education. The style of the two worlds has slowly melted in our current society, gone.So island and the mainland are no longer the current problem, because we can get different inspiration and resources from different places. We live in a different era.We hope to see these issues from history, and these issues are worthy of discussions.

The other three themes of the seminar are Southeast Asian Chinese and belief in Southeast Asian Chinese Performance Arts and the political economy of Southeast Asia.10 speakers come from Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, China, Australia and Malaysia.

Ma Yanqing, a senior government affairs of the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth and Ministry of Transport, is the guest of the seminar.
