People familiar with the matter also said that investigators are still trying to confirm the scope of the attack and how much data the attackers have checked and stole.

According to Reuters, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on Sunday (October 6) saying that it did not understand the online attack incident described by the Wall Street Journal report, but said that the United States had "fabricated false narratives" to framed China in the past.

Statement also stated: "When cyber security has become a common challenge for countries around the world, this error method will only prevent the international community's efforts to deal with challenges through dialogue and cooperation."

Liu Pengyu, a spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in the United States, also stated in a statement that China has resolutely opposed and combat all forms of cyber attacks and theft.
