Yi Gang is neither a member of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China nor the representative of the 14th National People's Congress. The outside world thought he would step down as the governor of the central bank.

Yi Gang is a "returnee" official. He was sent to the United States to study a PhD in economics in the 1980s, and taught in the United States for eight years.

After returning to China in 1994, Yi Gang and well -known economist Lin Yifu formed the China Economic Research Center of Peking University and taught at Peking University.

He joined the central bank three years later, and served as deputy governor at the end of 2007 until 2018.
