(Hong Kong Comprehensive News) Yuan Mu, the former spokesperson of the State Council of China, passed away in Beijing on December 13 at the age of 91. The farewell ceremony was held yesterday morning (23) at the Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery in Beijing. Hundreds of people were reported to see him off.

Based on reports from Radio Hong Kong and Sing Tao Daily, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, CPPCC Chairman Wang Yang, Vice Premier Han Zheng and State Vice President Wang Qishan and other current leaders, as well as former leaders Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao, Li Peng, Zhu Rongji, Wen Jiabao, Zeng Qinghong and Yu Zhengsheng, etc., all send wreaths.

The publication produced by the organizer of the farewell ceremony pointed out that Yuan Mu died on December 13 due to illness and medical treatment failed, and described him as an outstanding member of the Communist Party of China and a long-tested and loyal communist fighter.

The publication also introduced that Yuan Mu served as the spokesperson of the State Council from 1986 to October 1992. Facing severe and complicated international and domestic situations, he deeply publicized the major policies of the Chinese state and responded to social concerns in a timely manner; especially at critical moments, his positionResolute and clear-cut, making important contributions to promoting overall social stability.

Yuan Mu worked as a reporter in his early years, and served as the spokesperson of the State Council during the political turmoil in 1989. His role, position and speeches once became the target of public criticism.In 1993, Yuan Mu served as a member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. After retiring in 2000, he served as the chairman of the China Policy Science Research Association.
