Former Canadian diplomat reportedly detained in China

A former Canadian diplomat was detained by China for unknown reasons. The outside world is worried that this may be related to the arrest of Huawei Vice Chairman Meng Wanzhou, which means that the diplomatic relations between China and Canada have further deteriorated.

The person detained is Michael Kovrig, who is currently a senior adviser on Northeast Asia at the nongovernmental organization International Crisis Group.Reuters quoted two sources tonight (11th) to reveal that Kovrig had been detained by the Chinese side.

The International Crisis Group, headquartered in Belgium, also issued a brief statement, stating that the organization has been informed of reports that Kovrig was detained by the Chinese side, and is currently doing everything possible to obtain more information about Kovrig's whereabouts, and at the same time strive for his early and safe release.

Kovrig has worked as a full-time expert at the organization since February 2017, the statement said.

The location and reason for China's detention of Kovrig is currently unknown, nor can it be determined whether the incident is related to Meng Wanzhou's arrest.Kovrig’s Twitter account was last updated on December 9.

China's foreign ministry and public security ministry did not respond today to Reuters' faxed inquiries about Kovrig's detention. The Canadian embassy also declined to comment, referring inquiries to Ottawa.

Information shows that Kovrig was a Canadian diplomat stationed in Beijing and Hong Kong, and also served as a strategic communications expert for the United Nations Development Program at the United Nations Headquarters. He can speak Chinese.

He joined the International Crisis Group last year as a senior consultant in Northeast Asia, researching and analyzing foreign affairs and global security issues of China, Japan and the Korean Peninsula.
