(Beijing/San Francisco Comprehensive News) Zhang Shousheng, a famous Chinese-American physicist and tenured professor at Stanford University, died unexpectedly of depression last Saturday (1st).The timing of the arrest was a coincidence, which caused many speculations.

Based on reports from Sina News, The Paper, South China Morning Post and other media, Zhang Shousheng's family issued a statement the day before yesterday, stating that Zhang Shousheng passed away unexpectedly on the 1st at the age of 55.

Zhang Shousheng is an internationally renowned physicist who once studied under Yang Zhenning, and his research mainly focuses on condensed matter physics.Zhang Shousheng was selected into China's Thousand Talents Program in 2009 and was specially appointed as a professor by Tsinghua University; in addition, he is also an academician of the American Academy of Sciences and a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

His major contributions in physics include research on topological insulators, quantum spin Hall effect, etc. On July 21 this year, he announced the discovery of the Majorana fermion, an angel particle that is as famous as the Higgs boson particle and dark matter.

Zhang Shousheng's scientific achievements are astonishing, including all important awards in the global physics community, and Yang Zhenning is also optimistic about being the next Chinese Nobel Prize winner.

He was also an active investor in Silicon Valley during his lifetime. He once founded the venture capital company Danhua Capital with his students and served as the founding chairman. He is known as the venture capitalist closest to the Nobel Prize.

Danhua Capital has invested in 113 foreign projects, including blockchain and enterprise-level applications, and is considered to be a bridge between Stanford University, Silicon Valley and China.

Danhua Capital was included in the updated Section 301 investigation report by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) in November this year, and was accused of using venture capital to help China obtain cutting-edge technology and related intellectual property rights in the United States.

Therefore, after the news of Zhang Shousheng's death came out, some overseas media speculated whether Zhang Shousheng's suicide coincided with Meng Wanzhou's arrest and the meeting between the Chinese and US leaders Xi and Trump on the same day. Some analysts pointed out that even if the three events happened on the same day, even if it was just a coincidence, it would objectively embarrass China and make the Sino-US trade negotiations in the next 90 days more difficult.

However, a spokesman for Zhang Shousheng's family clarified that he committed suicide due to depression, and no police investigation has been launched. The spokesperson emphasized that Zhang Shousheng's death has nothing to do with the 301 investigation, and hopes that the outside world will not link this tragedy with the relationship between the two countries.

Zhang Shousheng's family said in an earlier email: When we face this devastating news, we are very grateful for the support and condolences we have received... But when we are saddened by this great loss, we ask the public to respect our privacy.
