The wife of Interpol chief Meng Hongwei reported to the French police that Meng disappeared after returning to China at the end of September.French police revealed on October 5 that they have launched an investigation into the case.

According to the Deutsche Welle Chinese website, Meng Hongwei's wife is still living in Lyon, France, where the Interpol headquarters is located.

Meng Hongwei is the Vice Minister of Public Security of China. In November 2016, he was elected president of Interpol for a four-year term until 2020.He is also the first chairman from China since the establishment of Interpol.

China's judicial system is required to be loyal to the party, and Meng's election has aroused public opinion's doubts and concerns about the fairness of international organizations.

In April this year, China's Xinhua Net reported that the Ministry of Public Security's "Leadership Information" column was recently updated, showing that the Vice Minister of Public Security, Meng Hongwei, is no longer a member of the Ministry of Public Security's Party Committee.

According to French media reports such as Europe 1, Meng's family said that since Meng Hongwei went to China on September 29, they had lost contact with him, and the French authorities launched an investigation on this.

In a statement, Interpol said it was aware of the incident, saying it was being handled by relevant French and Chinese authorities.Regarding Meng Hongwei's itinerary during his stay in China and why his wife only reported the crime now, Interpol has not given more information.
